  1. Dare to be Different: Nick Williams – Costa Mesa, CA, United States ·
I’ve had several conversations after this last weekend with people who feel discouraged about their dancing. They feel that they do not fit in with the current trends and, because of this, feel irrelevant.
Many years ago, I chose to follow my own path and design my dancing they way I want regardless of current trends. This does make me feel lonely and irrelevant from time to time. It’s all part of the journey. You are not alone.
What you have to ask yourself is if a contest placement or pride in the way you designed your dancing is more important? It’s easy to crack under the pressure and follow the trends. If you love the current trends, do that. If you values lie somewhere else, I want to encourage you to stick with them, even in the hard times. Trends really do come and go.
The Spirit of Lindy Hop is not a particular dance style. It’s about expressing yourself (with your partner) to the music. Self expression. “Self” can only be maintained if you stick to your values and ideals.
Nobody dances Lindy like they did in the 30’s and 40’s. Being yourself is the only path to greatness. Frankie (Manning) chose to be different, and he will forever be a legend!
    Be legendary.
