Swing On In Dancer Profile – Miss Gemma Simone…(Robinson)

When Gemma walked in to our class that first night I could see her shaking..  Tall, Leggy, Beautiful with a smile that just slays you, she was concentrating so hard for about 5 minutes then Bam, she had it and she didn’t stop beaming…  Getting closer to this gal over time has been such a joy for all of us but it wasn’t until recently she told me something really profound that really made Ray and I realise the power of dance, the power of community and what we do here at Swing On In.  Gemma said that she had been suffering depression for quite awhile and could not get out from under that dark cloud..  she really used all she had to get to class that first night and when she left she said she was smiling, she was happy and that cloud never came back!  That’s pretty awesome…  I have always believed this as it has gotten me through the worst times in my life but Ray and I were so so happy to hear how it had also lifted Gemma and baby cakes, we are so happy you are party of our dance family.

– Name, Rank & Serial Number:

Gem, lover of all things chocolate, proto type

– How did you find us and get into Swing Dancing?

As a little girl, I was always fascinated by anything WW2. Despite the horrors of that time, I loved the way communities would come together and all be able to do this awesome “old fashion” dancing (I was yet to discover this was known as Lind Hop!). I’d watch movies based in this period of time, and when noticing all this fun dancing, I knew I wanted to do it!

The only thing I had to do was find the time (and guts). Coming from a background of sport with endless training, time was something I never had. After suffering a pretty bad injury, and being out for so long, my interest sparked to ACTUALLY try swing.

I found Swing On In online, and I just had a feeling I had to go to the Tuesday night class. Now for the guts. The only time I had ever danced I had 3 left feet! Coordination was not my thing. How in the world could I do this???? Rocking up to this class was the hardest thing for me to do because I was so uncertain of myself. It also turned out to be the best thing I’ve done. Each week I am looking forward to swing dancing classes as it’s always full of fun, laughter, and I get to dance!. I made so many incredible friends, gained a major level of confidence to try new things in life, and of course I’m the happiest I’ve ever been with swing in my life.

– Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do/business/hobbies/etc?

Full time air chef (yep, that’s what they call a Flight Attendant), getting out and about exploring the world but whenever I’m in the country I am at anything swing dance related.

– Tell us something random about you!

I sprecken ze French (I would normally say that I swing dance for this kind of question)

– If you were a Swing Move, What would it be?

Any move that involves a jump or a spin!

– How would you describe your style of dancing?

Clumsy. I think all the leads know that if they dance with me, their toes are going to be squashed at some point.

I love action movies, but for the sake of picking one… maybe The Avengers

– What’s your fav swing tune?

The Milt Buckner version of: Hey! Ba Ba Re Bop!

– What is/are your fashion influences/eras/icons?

Absolutely in love with late 1930’s-1940’s. I haven’t quite finished exploring my own style as such, but I am moving in a more simple and classic direction – definitely a fan of Katharine Hepburn.

– What’s your favorite quote on life

“You try, you fail. You try, you fail. But the only true failure is when you stop trying”

– Who would you nominate to be profiled next?

Amanda C!! You’re up!!!
